10:22 am - When I said a female Transformer would be cool...
You know, the first Transformer movie was, to put it mildly, a complete piece of crap. Without getting into all of the particulars as to why, one of my minor complaints was "how come they couldn't have a female Transformer?" I mean, there were only about ten of them in the film. Would it have killed them to make ONE female?! Apparently they had considered it, but did "not to confuse the audience with multiple gendered robots." *headdesk*

Well, they've gotten over that bit of idiocy and are introducing a female Transformer in the sequel (click link to see picture).

Holy f**k! That's not what I meant!!! Yes, Arcee was in the cartoon, and yes, she was pink (hooray for gendered branding! /snark), but COME ON! Hot pink, with high heels and a Barbie body?! I suppose I should be grateful the headlights don't become her breasts? I'm willing to bet there will be a sappy 'bot love story to go with it.

FAIL.

Well when you're that non-specific in your suggestions...

I mean... it is a female transformer.

To go along with the pretty obvious horseshit of "oh noes, people will get confused if there's more than one gender!" they've decided that people are too stupid to recognize a female character as female unless it is pink and hypersexualized.

They're robots. Or, if I remember correctly, a robotic race from another galaxy or some such. Still, robots. Machines. Exactly why do they need to meet stereotypical representations of human gender? I kind of doubt Arcee is going to be birthing robo-babies, so what's the point of giving her boobs and a booty other than to sexualize her and mark her as female without working too hard at it.

Think of it this way. If you look at this picture, what markers do you have to determine gender? But if you look at the one of Arcee linked in the post, it's obvious. The point is that the female Transformer MUST be readily identifiably female, as different, so there's no confusion. Heaven forbid the audience not know on sight the gender of the robot!

My suggestion is that being female doesn't have to be made into an exception to the norm. They don't need to put a big neon sign that says "GIRL BOT OVER HERE!" on her to make her female.

Since the movie (with voice samples) doesn't come out for a while, we could tell everyone that RC is a flaming gay male robot, then link to the picture and watch the commentary ensue. It might be enough to get people to actually think about it, and then when they hear she's a girl robot, still think that she looks ridiculous.
